హైదరాబాద్, ఫిబ్రవరి 10 : ముఖ్యమంత్రి అభ్యర్థిగా తనను తాను అనుకోవడం లేదని ప్రజారాజ్యం పార్టీ అధినేత చిరంజీవి స్పష్టం చేశారు. పదవులకోసం అర్రులు చాచడంలేదని, అధికారం అనేది కేవలం అలంకారప్రాయమేనని కూడా ఆయన వ్యాఖ్యానించారు. ఇంకా ఆ మాటకొస్తే చిరంజీవిగా అంతకంటె ఎక్కువే అనుభవించానని కూడా ఆయన వివరించారు. కాంగ్రెస్‌తో ప్రజారాజ్యం పార్టీ విలీనానికి సూత్రప్రాయ ఒప్పందం కుదిరిన అనంతరం తొలిసారిగా ఎ.బి.ఎన్. ఆంధ్రజ్యోతి ఎం.డి. వేమూరి రాధాకృష్ణ నిర్వహించిన మెగా డిబేట్‌లో పాల్గొంటూ తాను ఏమి చేసినా ప్రజా సంక్షేమం కోసమేనని ఆయన అన్నారు.

కాంగ్రెస్, ప్రజారాజ్యం పార్టీల విలీనానికి సంబంధించిన మిగిలిన ప్రక్రియ పూర్తి కావడానికి సుమారు 45 రోజులు పట్టవచ్చునని చిరంజీవి చెప్పారు. విలీనానికి సంబంధించిన బహిరంగ సభ విజయవాడ లేదా గుంటూరులలో ఉండవచ్చునేమోనని ఆయన ఒక ప్రశ్నకు సమాధానంగా చెప్పారు. తాను అందరివాడిగానే ఉండాలనే ఆకాంక్షను వ్యక్తం చేస్తూ కాంగ్రెస్ పార్టీకి భవిష్యత్తులో తానే దళపతినని ఆయన నవ్వుతూ అంగీకరించారు. కాంగ్రెస్‌లో ప్రధాన లోపం స్టార్ కాంపెయినర్ లేకపోవడమేనని చిరంజీవి అభిప్రాయపడ్డారు.

దాదాపు రెండు గంటల పాటు జరిగిన ఈ డిబేట్‌లో చిరంజీవి మనసు విప్పి మాట్లాడారు. నా రాకతో కాంగ్రెస్ పార్టీకి పెద్ద ఊతం వచ్చిందని కేంద్ర మంత్రులు జైపాల్ రెడ్డి, ప్రణబ్ ముఖర్జీ వంటివారు ప్రశంసించడంతో సంతోషం కలిగిందని ఆయన చెప్పారు. కొంతమంది కాంగ్రెస్‌వాదులలో వ్యక్తమవుతున్న వ్యతిరేకత గురించి ప్రశ్నించగా అది చాలా తక్కువ శాతమేనని ఆయన అన్నారు.

ఉభయ పక్షాల విలీనం ప్రతిపాదనను ఒక శక్తికి, మరో శక్తి తోడు కావడంగా భావించినట్టు చిరంజీవి చెప్పారు. విలీనం తర్వాత కాంగ్రెస్ నాయకుడు చిరంజీవి అని అభివర్ణించవలసివస్తుందన్నప్పుడు కాంగ్రెస్ నేతగా నన్ను పిలవడమంటే పెళ్లి అయిన తర్వాత ఇంటి పేరు మారినట్టేనని ఆయన ఛలోక్తి విసిరారు. అవినీతిపైనా, కుంభ కోణాలపైనా తన పోరాటం కొనసాగుతుందని చిరంజీవి చెప్పారు.

తన యుద్ధం వ్యక్తులపై కాదని, వ్యవస్థపైనే అని ఆయన ఒక ప్రశ్నకు సమాధానంగా చెప్పారు. నీతి నిజాయితీలే ఆయుధంగా తాను ముందుకు సాగుతానని ఆయన చెప్పారు. ప్రజారాజ్యం పార్టీ విలీనం అనంతరం కూడా తన ఆశయాలు కొనసాగుతాయని ఆయన చెప్పారు. వై.ఎస్. రాజశేఖర రెడ్డి మరణానంతరం ఏర్పడిన రాజకీయ శూన్యతలో కాంగ్రెస్‌కు కొంత అస్థిర పరిస్థితి ఏర్పడిన మాట వాస్తవం అని, ఆ సమయంలో పరిస్థితులను తమకు అనుకూలంగా మార్చుకోవడానికి ప్రత్యర్థులు యత్నించారని ఆయన చెప్పారు. ఈ పరిస్థితులలో ప్రభుత్వ ఖజానాపై భారం పడకుండా, ప్రజా శ్రేయస్సును దృష్టిలో ఉంచుకుని తాను ముందుకు వచ్చినట్టు ఆయన చెప్పారు.

వై.ఎస్. మరణించిన అనంతరం అతి తక్కువ సమయంలోనే జగన్‌ను ముఖ్యమంత్రి చేయాలని కొందరు కాంగ్రెస్ నాయకులు వచ్చి మద్దతు కోరడాన్ని జీర్ణించుకోలేకపోయానని చిరంజీవి చెప్పారు. వై.ఎస్. మృతదేహం అక్కడ ఉండగానే, వై.ఎస్. అంత్యక్రియలు పూర్తి కావడానికి ముందే జగన్‌కు మద్దతు ఇవ్వాలన్న ప్రతిపాదన వచ్చినట్టు ఆయన ఒక ప్రశ్నకు సమాధానంగా అంగీకరించారు. అలాంటి ప్రయత్నం అమానుషం అనిపించింది. మానవ త్వం కాని ఆ ప్రయత్నాన్ని హర్షించలేకపోయాను. గుండెలో ఇంకా తడిగా ఉంది. అప్పుడే ఆ ప్రయత్నాలు కూడదని చెప్పాను. అప్పటికి మనసులో ఇంకా పచ్చిపచ్చిగానే ఉంది, ఇటువంటి సమయంలో ఇలా అడుగుతారేమిటని బాధ కలిగిందని ఆయన చెప్పారు. అందరూ సంతకాలు పెట్టారు, మీరు కూడా సంతకం పెట్టాలంటే, అది అమానుషం అనిపించిందని ఆయన వెల్లడించారు. ప్రజాస్వామ్యంలో ఎవరి తర్వాత ఎవరు అంటే దానికో పద్ధతి ఉంటుంది, లేదూ కాంగ్రెస్ పార్టీ వంటి చోట్ల పార్టీ అధిష్ఠానం ఉంటుందని ఆయన చెప్పారు.

ప్రజారాజ్యం పార్టీ ఎన్నికలో విజయం సాధించకపోవడానికి తన బాధ్యత లేదని, నమ్ముకున్నవారు నట్టేట ముంచడమేనని ఆయన అభిప్రాయపడ్డారు. రాజకీయాలలోకి వచ్చినందుకు బాధ పడలేదు గాని ఎన్నో సందర్భాలలో మనస్తాపానికి గురయ్యానని చిరంజీవి ఎమోషనల్‌గా చెప్పారు. హరిరామజోగయ్య తాను ఏ పార్టీలో ఉన్నారో ఆయనకే తెలియదు, గట్టిగా చెప్పాలంటే పశ్చిమ గోదావరి జిల్లాలో ప్రజారాజ్యం పార్టీ నిర్వీర్యమైపోవడానికి బాధ్యత ఆయనది కాదా అని ఆయన ప్రశ్నించారు. పాలకొల్లులో కూడా పోటీ చేయడానికి కారణం హరిరామజోగయ్యేనని అని ఆయన వెల్లడించారు. మీరు ఏమీ చేయనక్కరలేదు, వచ్చి నామినేషన్ వేస్తే చాలన్నవారు, విజయం గురించి భరోసా ఇచ్చి మాట్లాడినవారు ఇప్పుడు ఏదేదో మాట్లాడుతున్నారని చిరంజీవి నవ్వేశారు. నన్ను రాజకీయాలలోకి రమ్మన్నవారే నట్టేట ముంచారని ఆయన హరిరామజోగయ్య, శివశంకర్ వంటివారిని ఉద్దేశించి చిరంజీవి వ్యాఖ్యానించారు.

నన్ను ఆహ్వానించడానికి ఆంటొనీ తమ ఇంటికి రావడమే కాంగ్రెస్ పార్టీ తనకు ఇచ్చే గౌరవంగా భావిస్తున్నట్టు ఆయన చెప్పారు. రాష్ట్ర ప్రభుత్వం కూలకూడదనే నాయంతట నేనే ముందుకు వచ్చాను. నా గురించి నేను ఆలోచించడం లేదు, ప్రజలకోసమే ఆలోచిస్తున్నాను, తర్వాత పార్టీ శ్రేణులగురించి ఆలోచిస్తాను అని ఆయన చెప్పారు. సోదరుడు నాగబాబు, పవన్ కల్యాణ్‌ల గురించి అడిగిన ప్రశ్నకు నాగబాబు, పవన్ కల్యాణ్‌లు ఇద్దరూ దేవుడు ఇచ్చిన వరం అని, నాగబాబు రాజకీయాలలో ఉండాలనుకుంటున్నారని, పవన్ ఎప్పుడు పిలిస్తే అప్పుడు ప్రచారానికి వ స్తాడని ఆయన చెప్పారు. అరవింద్ గురించి అడగగా ఆయన పాత్ర ఆయనకు ఉంటుందని చిరంజీవి చెప్పారు.

భవిష్యత్తులో 150 వ సినిమా గురించి ప్రశ్నించగా ప్రజలకు సేవ చేయడానికి ఇప్పుడున్న బాధ్యతలే ముఖ్యమంటూ అందులోని భాగంగా మంచి కథ దొరికితే ఎందుకు చేయకూడదని ఆయన నవ్వుతూ ప్రశ్నించారు.

చిరంజీవిని రాజ్యసభకు పంపించి, కేంద్ర మంత్రిని చేసి, ఆ తర్వాత ఎన్నికల సమయానికి ఆయనను రాష్ట్రానికి పంపిస్తారన్న అభిప్రాయం గురించి ప్రస్తావించగా, తనకు అటువంటి సంకేతాలేమీ రాలేదని ఆయన చెప్పారు. వరంగల్‌లో జరిగిన అనుభవాన్ని గుర్తు చేసుకుంటూ గుడ్లు వేసిన చోటే పువ్వులు కూడా వేశారని ఆయన గుర్తు చేసుకున్నారు. అందువల్ల తాను దేనికీ కుంగిపోయేది లేదని ఆయన చెప్పారు.

నిస్వార్థంగా బ్లడ్ బ్యాంక్ నిర్వహిస్తుంటే విమర్శలు వినవలసి రావ డంతో చాలా బాధ పడ్డానని, ఏ తప్పూ లేదని తమకు ప్రభుత్వం నుంచి యోగ్యతాపత్రం లభించినప్పుడు మీడియా ప్రముఖంగా ప్రసారం చేయకపోవడాన్ని ఆయన కొంత ఆక్షేపించారు. డబ్బులు తీసుకుని టిక్కెట్లు అమ్ముకున్నారన్న ఆరోపణలు కూడా బాధించాయని ఆయన ఆవేదన వ్యక్తం చేశారు.

కిరణ్‌కుమార్ రెడ్డి ప్రభుత్వాన్ని చక్కగా నడుపుతున్నారు, ఇంకా నడుపుతారని భావిస్తున్నాని ఆయన అన్నారు. కిరణ్‌కు అండదండలు ఇస్తానని ఆయన చెప్పారు. నైతిక త, అనైతికతపై మాట్లాడే హక్కు నా ఒక్కడికే ఉంది అంటూ సి.పి.ఐ. నాయకుడు నారాయణ చేసిన ఆరోపణలను కొట్టిపారేశారు. అలాగే టిక్కెట్టుకోసం ప్రజారాజ్యం పార్టీ రెండు కోట్లు తీసుకుందని ఒక మహిళ ఆరోపించడాన్ని ఆయనే ప్రస్తావిస్తూ ఆమె ఆర్థిక పరిస్థితి ఏమిటో తెలుసుకోవాలని, ఎవరు వెనకనుంచి నడిపిస్తున్నారో చిన్న పిల్లవాడిని అడిగినా చెబుతారని ఆయన అన్నారు.

వై.ఎస్. హయాంలో అవినీతి జరిగింద న్నది సుస్పష్టం అంటూ ప్రజా సంక్షేమ పథకాల అమలులో అవినీతి జరుగుతోందని, ఈ విషయాన్నే కాంగ్రెస్ పార్టీ అధినేత్రి సోనియా గాంధికి చెప్పాననీ ఆయన చెప్పారు. భవిష్యత్తులో కూడా తన పోరాటం కొనసాగుతుందని ఆయన చెప్పారు.

నా మెతక వైఖరి నాకు అడ్వాంటేజ్ అనుకుంటున్నాను. అవసరమైనప్పుడు కఠిన వైఖరి కూడా అవలంబించగలను. ఆ రెండవ కోణం కూడా చూస్తారని ఆయన చెప్పారు. అసెంబ్లీ ఎన్నికలలో 180 సీట్లు వస్తాయనుకుంటే 18 సీట్లే వచ్చినా షేక్ కాలేదు అంటూ ప్రజా శ్రేయస్సే తన పరమావధి అని ఆయన చెప్పారు. మిమ్మల్ని, మీ వాళ్లనీ కాంగ్రెస్ పార్టీ గౌరవప్రదంగా చూసుకుంటామని సోనియా చెప్పారని ఆయన సంతోషం వ్యక్తం చేశారు.

నన్ను రాజ్యసభకు పంపిస్తారన్న సంకేతం తనకేమీ రాలేద ంటూ పార్టీ ఏది చెబితే విలీనం తర్వాత అది చేస్తానని ఆయన చెప్పారు. నేను సామాజిక న్యాయం నినాదం చేపట్టిన తర్వాతే రాజకీయంగా, సామాజికంగా సామాజిక న్యాయం అనేది నినాదంగా వచ్చిందని ఆయన చెప్పారు.

Telangana PRP group forms “Praja Telangana Samithi”.

Leaders of the Praja Rajyam party from the Telangana region formed a separate entity, Praja Telangana Samithi, today. At a meeting here, the leaders, who have resigned recently in protest against party president Chiranjeevi’s decision to stand by integrated State, decided to float a new party and adopted a resolution.

The leaders adopted the party flag and constituted an executive committee. According to PTS leader VGR Naragoni, the party flag bears the slogans ‘Jai Telangana’ and ‘Jai Samajika Nyayam’ and a map of the Telangana region against a parrot-green background.

He told reporters that C Karunakar Reddy would be the president, P Karuna the vice-president, and Dr Venkat, Sivakumar Lingayath, Rajamouli and Raji Reddy the members of the Political Affairs Committee of which would be the chairman. Six secretaries and presidents for nine district units were also appointed, Naragoni said.

Giving details of the resolutions adopted at the meeting, he said the meeting asked Telugu Desam president N Chandrababu Naidu and Praja Rajyam president K Chiranjeevi to quit politics for going back on their promise on Telangana, and urged the Centre to expedite the process of consultations on Telangana within a time-frame.

The new party decided to join the all-party JAC formed yesterday to spearhead to Telangana movement, appealed to the State Government to drop the cases on students and condemned the attack on TD legislator N Janardhan Reddy on the OU campus. It urged the people of coastal and Rayalaseema people to suggest a compensation package for their region in the case of State’s division. The meeting mourned the students who lost their lives fighting for the Telangana cause, Naragoni said. Praja Rajyam Party voices concern to HR panel

The Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) has urged the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) to direct the authorities concerned to take immediate measures to check the spread of water-borne diseases in the State.

A delegation of PRP leaders today met SHRC chairperson Justice B Subhashan Reddy and described the prevailing situation in the State as a health crisis.

They said that in the agency areas of Visakhapatnam district 16 tribal deaths had been reported in the last 45 days on account of anthrax. Government records themselves showed that there were 55 cases of anthrax, but adequate measures had yet to be taken, the PRP alleged.

Referring to the Bholakpur incident, the PRP leaders noted that “primitive’’ diseases like cholera had broken out even in the State capital. Several other parts of the city had been affected and the situation was also alarming in Adilabad, Vizianagaram, Srikakulam, Medak, Warangal and Ananthapur. The PRP delegation blamed the government for sheer negligence in checking contamination and in replacing outdated water and sewerage pipes.

Instead of swinging into action, the ministers concerned had gone to the extent of dismissing the crisis as a “routine affair’’ and a political ploy by the Opposition and the media.

PRP leaders P Upendra, C Ramachandraiah and others were part of the delegation which met the SHRC chairperson.

PRP plea to Govt: The State Government should take measures immediately to contain the spread of cholera and gastroenteritis which have assumed epidemic proportions, the Praja Rajyam has demanded.

Speaking to the media here today, party general secretary Vinay Kumar said the government had failed to supply clean drinking water to rural people.

A team of doctors, who included himself, had visited Mandamarri in Adilabad district and found the gastroenteritis patients in a deplorable condition, he said.

Vinay Kumar said that the 10- bed primary health centre was not equipped to serve about 300 patients in the town. As the PHC lacked the essential medicines, his party had supplied medicines and IV fluids worth Rs 1 lakh there, he said.

US charge d’affaires meets Chiranjeevi

United States charge d’affaires in India Peter Burleigh met Praja Rajyam party president Chiranjeevi here today and discussed the political affairs in the State and the Indo- American relations.

Speaking to mediapersons later, Chiranjeevi said that Burleigh evinced interest in the State politics and enquired about the prospects of the PRP. ``Peter asked me about the prospects of PRP in the elections and what has favored the party in the polls. To my surprise the US official spoke about the caste equations in the State. He also asked me the reasons for establishing the party,’’ Chiranjeevi explained.

The US diplomat explained to him the policies of the government in his country and the efforts to forge friendly relations with India.

He was particularly interested to know how the new party conducted its election campaign and how he was able to meet the people. The PRP president requested the diplomat to convey his compliments to US President Barack Obama who completed 100 days in the White House.

Chiranjeevi introduced his son Ramcharan Tej to Peter Burleigh and felicitated him and his team members.

Chiru woos fans with promises

HYDERABAD: In an attempt to retain his fans, Praja Rajyam president K. Chiranjeevi on Sunday called a few hundreds of them from across the State and held a three-hour meeting.
While the media was invited only for ‘visuals’, it was understood that the megastar-turned-politician wanted to ensure that the fans were with him ‘well and truly’.

He assured them that they would be ‘well-looked-after’ when the party rose to a position of prominence soon, reminding them that they would be preferred in the polls to municipalities and other local bodies.

Mr. Chiranjeevi invited those who left the party to come back, saying they were all like his family. “It is common for siblings to have differences, but they still remain part of the family,” he stated.

Prominent among those present was B. Ramu Yadav, newly-appointed State president of ‘Rashtra Chiranjeevi Yuvatha’, considered to be the official body of the megastar’s fans.

A fan since 1984, he became president after Ch. Venkateswara Rao and about half-a-dozen others joined the Congress in the presence of Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy a few days ago.

Mr. Rao and another fan, Vittal Rao, from Krishna district and Tanuku Ganapati, from West Godavari district, were all peeved at being denied party ticket and hence shifted their loyalties. Mr. Yadav, though being denied a ticket from Amberpet, was satisfied that Mr. Chiranjeevi initially offered him ticket from Malakpet.

Visibly happy

“I politely declined and worked for the party nominee from Amberpet,” he said. Refusing to go on record, some ‘fans’ were happy at being invited for the interaction. They were bubbling with enthusiasm at the reception from the PR president, having been his fans for decades. The meeting was a rarity, considering that no party functionary was present.

Film star Chiranjeevi is the latest celebrity to enter Indian politics. The BBC's Damian Grammaticas joined him on the campaign trail in the southern state of Andhra Pradesh.

As Chiranjeevi's campaign truck swings into view the huge crowds lining the road erupt.

A boiling, heaving mass of people screams adulation at their hero. The noise is so loud I can't even hear myself speak.

They surge forwards, some literally throwing themselves at the film star's vehicle. Muscled young men in the security team protecting the truck fight to keep the crowds back.

One supporter carrying a giant necklace of flowers tries to climb up to the roof of the vehicle to present it to Chiranjeevi. The guards drag him back down, ripping his shirt from his back, then they thrust his garland into my hand to pass it to the screen idol. The huge string of flowers must weigh an incredible 5kg.

Standing on the roof of the bus, serenely calm amidst all the chaos, Chiranjeevi, clasps his hands in prayer and bows his heads to the crowds. As he does so the noise rises even louder, reaching a crescendo that makes my ears ring.

The 53-year-old who they call Megastar or The Immortal One, is making his political debut in this election, and he's added a new, electrifying dynamic to the vote in Andhra Pradesh, one of India's key battleground states.

'Justice for poor'

We joined him for the last day of campaigning ahead of the second phase of voting in the general election. Across Andhra Pradesh hundreds of thousands have come out to hear Chiranjeevi speak, his biggest rallies have drawn crowds estimated at more than a million.

In the temple town of Tirupati he took the microphone and berated the ruling Congress Party for doing nothing for the poor, the crowd roared approval.

He castigated another rival party for caring only about the rich in the cities when it held power and the listening mass shouted even louder.

Chiranjeevi is one of India's highest-paid and highest-profile movie actors. The leading light of Tollywood, the Telugu language film industry, he's made more than 100 movies in a career that has spanned three decades.

In many of his roles he plays the hero battling to protect the little man. Now he's seeking to carry that screen image into the crowded world of Indian politics.

"I want justice for the poor," the moustachioed film idol told me, standing on top of his campaign truck as we sped down the road from one stop to the next.

"For too long power in this country has been held by just a few, everyone else has been kept out, it's time that changed," he said.

He's even called his new political party, the Praja Rajyam Party - meaning People's Rule.
Behind us a line of supporters on motorbikes chased us down the road. The security men, hanging precariously from the outside of their jeeps, tried to wave them back.
Crowds leant out of the windows of buses cheering at the movie star.

"The rich in India have been getting richer, the poor have been getting poorer," Chiranjeevi explained as we ducked to avoid low power lines. "I want to make that difference less, to narrow the gap."

Wealth divide

And in modern India the differences are stark. Not far from Tirupati where he was campaigning is the city of Bangalore. It's been at the heart of India's economic boom in recent years.

The leader in India's outsourcing revolution, it's grown to employ 100,000 software engineers, 20,000 work on its main campus in Bangalore alone.

The place is an oasis, manicured lawns stretch between glass office blocks, fountains play lazily as young computer programmers stroll between meetings. A glass pyramid stands in the heart of the complex.

Hitesh Sharma, 26 and not long out of university, is one of the young generation who make up the new, confident, rising India.

As we tour the campus in a golf buggy he tells me: "I believe India's future is bright. We are young, imaginative, innovative. We have an economy that has weathered the global storm. I believe India will be an economic superpower."

But it's a different world just a couple of hours drive away. There's nothing high-tech about the village of Panakanahalli. People sit listlessly in the shade to escape the midday heat, buffaloes chew lazily in the shadows, and an ox cart trundles slowly by.

Standing at the village pump, operating it by hand to fill her water pots is 28-year-old Savita. She balances her 18-month-old baby girl Meeta on her hip, while her other daughter, six-year-old Sinchana, helps carry the water back to their tiny hut.

Savita is trying to bring up both girls alone. Last year her husband Nagraj, a farm labourer, drank weedkiller and committed suicide.

Their baby Meeta was just one-month-old at the time. Burdened down by debts of around $2,000 which he could not repay, Nagraj simply gave up and killed himself.

There has been an epidemic of suicides on India's farms in recent years. Crushed by debt and poverty, an estimated 100,000 farmers and labourers have taken their lives in the past decade, many in this belt of southern India.

"This is my destiny, the life of a poor labourer, there is no one who can help me in my situation now," says Savita, sitting on the floor of her empty hut, with a photo of her dead husband looking down from the wall.

Promises

It's exactly this huge gap of living standards and expectations between rich and poor that Chiranjeevi is promising to narrow.

And as we cruise through the streets of Tirupati, his adoring fans can't contain their excitement. Women line balconies along the route and shower his campaign truck with yellow flowers.
It's like rain falling from the sky. Soon the entire vehicle is covered in petals. More and more giant garlands are thrown from the crowd towards the film star. Sitting on the trucks roof I am half buried under the flowers.

Chiranjeevi grins, sweats slightly in the heat, and fixes his eye on individuals, pointing his finger at them, then gives a thumbs up sign. The crowds scream approval again. He raises both arms as if in triumph.

Exactly what impact Chiranjeevi and his party will have on India's election isn't clear. At best his party will win a handful of seats.

But that could still leave him in a strong position to influence the make-up of the government in Andhra Pradesh state, and even be a valuable ally at the national level too.

By splitting the vote between the main parties he is adding a new, unpredictable dynamic to the poll. And above all he is focusing minds on the failure of traditional politicians to do much for many of India's poor.

In this election most candidates are making promises about how they will transform the lives of the worse-off.

Some are promising cash transfers, others free colour televisions, yet more cheap rice, or free education. Poverty and development are becoming central themes of the campaign.

So in many ways Chiranjeevi's promises aren't that much distinct from his rivals. The difference is the poor have a new hero to believe in now, and he's a man they already idolise.

How he fares in the election will become clear when votes are counted on 16 May.

Mega Wave Rocks Krishna District

Carrying the message of Change and Social Justice, Dr. Chiranjeevi stormed into Krishna District. What a difference a person with genuine concern for the people and a firm commitment to Social Justice can make to the political discourse in the State of Andhra Pradesh. No slogans of a grandfather being spouted by a grandson; instead we heard the concept of change, and its intertwining with social justice, explained with clarity of purpose and meaning. For that, as usual he was showered with flowers wherever he went, by women – a sea of women. And the youth screamed their throats out in approval as he spoke about his vision for them, of education and employment. The entire Krishna District stood still to listen to the Megamessage.

Dr. Chiranjeevi has been repeatedly saying that the role of governments and political parties is to understand the hardships of the people and to design and implement, policies and programs, honestly and as dharmadhikaris. True to that vision, he unveiled more programs that PRP will implement when voted to power:

1.Free gas connection for every household and supply of gas cylinders at Rs. 100. For too long have we seen our women toil before wood and kerosene stoves, coughing and literally urging the food to cook for their hungry families. Food for a family is not just rice: so PRP had already unveiled a Daily Needs Package, which would provide nutritional ballast to the people. This package of free gas connection and Rs. 100 per cylinder will enable our women to use more efficient and less polluting energy source to ensure that her family can get piping hot food, and in time! This is not a populist scheme, but a well thought out one for it takes into account one of the principal role that our women choose to perform in their lives: as the mother figures to their family.

2.Recruitment of teachers (DSC) before end of January of each calendar year. PRP has consistently advocated the view that successive governments, of TDP and Congress, have unconscionably neglected the public education sector. Not recruiting teachers in time and on a regular basis have kept our schools understaffed and our children ignorant. Education is a fundamental right and it is about the future of our children. Hence, we at PRP, view this to be non-negotiable sector. Consequently, fixing a specific time for recruitment of teachers on an annual basis would ensure that the State Government would be able to select our teachers long before the start of the next academic year. Further, teaching is a noble profession and a vital source of respectable employment for our youth.

3.Social Security for the Poor and the Middle Classes. Most of the poor in this country are a part of the unorganized sector, without any sort of social security. Further, the Middle Classes are also subject to vast vicissitudes of market forces and financial meltdowns. They also need to be protected against the uncertainties of global economies. PRP will design and implement an appropriate social security program for the people of Andhra Pradesh that would protect and empower them.

Also speaking about corruption, and its asphyxiating effect on peoples’ lives, Dr. Chiranjeevi pointed out that there is not much to choose between TDP and Congress. TDP, when in power, had opened the windows of the state to the smog of corruption; and Congress, for the past five years, had allowed the fires of corruption to burst in through our front doors. Either way, development has been stunted and peoples’ lives destroyed. The welfare of the people and the future of their children were being pumped into the pockets of the venal and the corrupt, he remarked.
